PDF manual
German submarine radar search receiver for the S-Band and X-Band signals, of 1944/45
This system worked fully passiv, thus it did not radiate any signal. The two S- and X-band antennae were mounted back to back. The Tunis antenna device was, according this manual, mounted inside the combined VLF and longwave antenna loop. There is, however, an indication that Tunis was (sometimes?) also mouned on a single pole, as is shown below. This photo was taken after U889 had surrendered to the Canadian Navy at Nova Scotia, in May 1945.
For this occasion, maybe also being operated at sea this way, is shown the Tunis antenna array, mounted on a vertical pole at the conning tower of U889. It was rotated manually. The antenna-loop according to manual FuMB26 is visible in the background. The S-band antenna FuMB24 is facing toward us. Thus, the X-band antenna is facing in the opposit direction.
